According to reports, depression affects older people differently than younger people. It is often associated with an increased risk of cardiac diseases and an increased risk of death from illness.

It often occurs with other medical illnesses and disabilities and it reduces the elderly person’s ability to rehabilitate.  Another research shows that depression increases the risk of suicide. Because of such risks, proper evaluation and treatment are necessary when a senior member of your family show signs of depression.

Your medical doctor can use a series of standard questions to screen your loved ones for depression. You can also make some assessments based on their behaviors and routines. According to Help Guide, the red flags include the following:

  • Showing sadness or feelings of despair
  • Unexplained or aggravated aches and pains
  • Loss of interest in socializing or lack of hobbies
  • Visible weight loss
  • Loss of appetite
  • Skipping meals and medication intake
  • Feelings of hopelessness or helplessness
  • Lack of motivation
  • Lack of energy
  • Sleep disturbances
  • Loss of self-worth
  • Slowed movement or speech
  • Increased use of alcohol or other drugs
  • Thoughts of suicide
  • Memory problems
