How to Take Care of People With Dementia

Caring for a loved one who is suffering from dementia is one of the most fulfilling acts anyone could possibly do. But still, taking care of someone with this kind of condition can be challenging both physically and emotionally when you’re not familiar on how to handle it.

Knowledge on how to handle a person suffering from dementia is not something we’re born with—but we can learn.

So, how do we handle it?

First of all, we have to understand that dementia is not really considered as a disease. People use the word dementia as an overall term that describes an extensive range of symptoms related to memory deterioration or other progressive brain disorders which makes it more difficult for them to perform their usual daily activities.

In order to fully grasp how to help those who are suffering from it, here’s a list of tips on how to deal with dementia behaviour problems:

  • use a friendly body language and physical handling to better communicate with the patient
  • considering giving them nutrition supplements when they start losing weight
  • never sweep under the rug their fears of water, and of feeling helplessness
  • because they have difficulty with language communication, watch for non-verbal clues such as pulling on clothes and increased agitation
  • try not to make any changes to their familiar environment unless if it’s absolutely necessary

Those are just simple tips on how to take care of people with dementia. Always remember that the first step is educating yourself and wholeheartedly applying it.
